We condemn this terror!!

Hey Guys

Just wanted to let all of you, who read this blog, know that Team Orion and SIMS condemn the perpetrators and their baseless justifications for the blast at German Bakery.

9 people dead and 40 injured might just be another statistic in our lives after all the terror our country has had to deal with. But these numbers will never be able to quantify the real value of a life.

Our prayers to those who have lost their loved ones. Our best wishes of a speedy recovery to those who are hurt.

Orion 2010 - The website Rock!

Hey guys

The website is on!

www.sims-orion2010.com

Its looks great and has some really cool crazy things done by the graphics team.

While we are still debating the music track, on the whole the team deserves all the applause as well as the bonus 1 hour sleep apart from the sanctioned 3 hours they get every night.

Mail us on orion@sims.edu in case you have something to say about the website!

Brickbats or Praises are all accepted!

Orion 2010 - EOM!!!

The end of month is here and we just realised how far we have actually come.

From a time when we didn't even know what the name of the event should be (most people don't know where Orion is in the sky)... we have reached a position where we have enough stuff to fill 10 volumes of encyclopedic happenings just for Orion.

Its been a long long journey. Like when we arrived from our holidays and decided to create Orion 2010 over coffee and samosas, to now when coffee and samosas have become staple since meals are a luxury.

A few guys in the team have not attended a single class for so long, the batch welcome's them with folded arms and the professor looks at them with suspicion (new guy...or old guy with plastic surgery?)

We have come far!

Orion 2010 - is feeling hungry!

Our baby Orion 2010 is feeling very hungry.

Is feeling hungry by the day and needs more food i.e. cash. Though initially set to grown into a small 4.5 lakh toddler it looks like it will become a 20 lakh jaggernaut.

And so we are now out to hunt... with nothing more than great will, a strong spirit and the support of some 4000 odd alumni, students and faculty.

Wish us luck!

Orion 2010 - back online!

Looks like we will be getting the website online soon!

And I bet you, the graphics guys have come out with something really good.

All these days to sweat, work and constant key crunching will now bear result.

GENTLEMEN! You may take your bows.... and a bath for heaven's sake!

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

WOW! Channel V is on!

Now this stuff is great!

Channel V has decided to cover Orion 2010 as well as do a valentines day special with us!

So guys start being nice to us.. cause we can get you on TV.

But please none of "Hi Mom I'm on TV!!"

What a tough day!

Boy did we guys have a tough day.

A couple of million meetings with a couple of million coffees.

Our systems have been deprived of sleep and sanity... ok maybe the sanity did not exist. But sleep... is something we all miss.

Quite a lot of work was done, a few success and a few let-downs. But the fact that we are working for something much bigger than ourselves, keeps us going a little further each day.

We have discovered more about ourselves, our team mates and the big bad world than any other case study in the world can simulate.

Looks like Orion 2010 is paying off... for some of us!

Reebok is IN!

Hey guys

We just roped in Reebok to be an event sponsor.

They will be giving us a ton of t-shirts and some amazing coupons.

Looks like my wardrobe is getting a Ree-boot!

Keep your fingers crossed for more such good news.

Smooth Operator - The Team

The Team for Smooth Operator is as follows

Bishwajeet Ghosh
Gaurav Kale
Sandeep Moorthy
Andre Fernandez

Some crazy stories follow soon!

Our Internal communications Team - Orion 2010

And now for the most powerful Duo, the likes of which, SIMS is yet to see.

These guys are the real rockstars of Orion 2010, the guys who manage all the crazy amounts of live real time data, lists, calls, mailings and basically anything that lesser mortals feel incapable of.

Presenting

Anupreet Singh
- A guy with the smile and spirit to have us unilaterally name him "Happy" though lately the sobriquet "The Smiling Sardar" seems apt. Beware of the smile - it hides behind it a though professional. A guy who brightens and giggles the place up effortlessly, one knows work is done if it's been given to Anupreet.

Sharon Chandy - They say that if you were the only one dying of thirst in the desert and decided to write a letter to your loved ones, you could expect a tap on your shoulder from someone who might just say "I think that sentence requires a comma over there". That someone will be Sharon Chandy. With professional standards that can only be matched by a thorough bred, he brings with him quality years of experience which are badly needed.

Happy Republic Day

Hey guys... Team Orion wishes you all a very Happy Republic Day.

We celebrated ours with the National Anthem, the Flag Hoisting ceremony and finally with cheese croissants, pancakes, mushroom and cheese omelettes as well as some great coffee.

Not very Indian, you may say about our choice of food, but we assure you that our appetite was as Indian as it can be.

Orion 2010 - Logistics Team

We just formed a very talented team of guys to do the dirtiest work possible for Orion 2010.

The Logistics Team.

Akanksha Sharma - The tiniest chick on campus is by far the biggest terror when it come to work! A real slave driver.

Kartik Jha - The fastest, smoothest talker in the kingdom of the fast & smooth talk. This guy plays with event logistics like he plays with words.

Kapil Satish Mehta - "The guy" when it come to getting any work done on campus. From your tap water to your tap beer, he can get it all done. A real cucumber cool fella.

Change of name - Part 2

The HR guys caught us near a really dark alley and brandished the most fearful weapon of all... a very fat book on HR.

They wern't too happy about their event getting a name change. Apparently they felt HR can never be connected to MIND GAMES. Had it not been for the big fat book we would have giggled ourselves crazy.

Anyway after we were released, we came up with new name. And somehow the name just seems better for the crazy HR game made by the equally crazy HR guys.

The Interpreters.

Now if you may excuse us, we need to dress our wounds from last night.

Saturday, January 23, 2010

The Name change!

Ok People.

Looks like we got enough hate mail about the names for our events.
Especially the finance event.

So now, after almost getting lynched, the finance guys have come up a name.

Stratefin - The finance event.

Our Graphics Team - Orion 2010

We finally managed to pick the most creative guys of the batch for the graphics. It took long cause we had to scour all the bars, pubs and joints of Pune and around to actually get to them in the first place.

A very talented bunch of guys they don't work for money - but for Maggi, sausages, coffee and beer.

Carbon Caliphs - Carbon Credits Game

With the Kyoto Protocol set to expire in 2012, the world is looking with anxiousness towards the next cap to be set on carbon emissions. In the past two decades, emissions of green houses gasses, has gone from just being a peripheral concern of civil society and a few scientists, to global movements demanding that the world’s leaders control the insatiable hunger of fossil fuels and put a leash on rampant industrialization eating into earth’s forests. Today however, we see that not only has global warming claimed a prime position in the political consciousness of countries but has become a new avenue of growth and revenue for capitalists, industrialists and budget crunched governments.

While the Kyoto Protocol was a start, the world is now bracing for tougher norms on carbon emissions and hence higher carbon credit prices. The world has seen regular upheavals in this nascent market and various policy changes towards global warming, due to various extraneous changes. Carbon Caliphs has been conceptualized keeping in mind the need for fresh and innovative approaches as well as the ability to develop strategies to sudden unforeseen developments. Participants of Carbon Caliphs have to develop strategies for
1. A construction company
2. A local government
3. A Green tech startup
4. An NGO

MercuRise - The B plan contest

Carve out a niche. Create uncontested markets. Conceive the future.

A great idea may be the solid foundation for any new venture but is merely not enough to ensure accomplishment and success. It must be backed by a concrete business model that presides over the various facets of a successful business.
Orion 2010 – The annual Management Festival of Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies, Pune – proudly presents “MercuRise” – The B-Plan competition.

“MercuRise” encourages individuals with a high Innovation index, to participate and showcase their business plan, which emphatically question & alter existing industry norms. This national B-Plan competition, not only assesses your creative and innovative idea, but also is the ultimate test a test of your entrepreneurial skills.

“MercuRise” focuses on an unexplored market opportunity, along with a detailed and well structured plan of achieving and sustaining profitability. The Business Plan must be clear and logical, easily conveying the entrepreneur’s strategic gap analysis.

The event is divided into 3 stages. During the first stage registered participants are required to submit an Executive Summary of their B-Plan. Shortlisted teams will then be required to submit the entire detailed B-Plan. Teams with the best B-Plans will be invited to the Sims campus for the Grand Finale. The Prizes are:

2nd Prize – Rs. 10,000

"Arjuna - Karma vs Kriya" - The Best Manager Event

Prepare for Glory! No Retreat! No Surrender! Orion 2010 presents “Arjuna – Karma vs. Kriya”. Arjuna is the ultimate warrior, full of dynamism and action. He was a man of ‘Karma and Kriya’, the one who faced all adversities with bravery. A peerless archer faced with many a dilemma, Arjuna proved his mettle during numerous trying times.

Managers today too, find themselves in catch-22 situations wherein in they must decide between the right and the wrong, faced with many challenging ethical, moral and organizational goal-related dilemmas. Management is what managers do. Their decisions influence an organization’s functioning in a multi-dimensional manner.

“Arjuna-Karma vs. Kriya”, the Best Manager competition at Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies, aims at testing the skills, capacity and character of the competitors. A grueling 48-hour long event will not only stretch the participants to their limit but at times, compel them to go beyond them. The fight would be not just to win, but to survive the competition.... or give up! The situations faced by them will rarely be commonplace and unilateral and solving them would call for on a perfect mix of caliber, patience and out-of-the-box thinking. The motive here is not just to survive till the end but to adapt, out shine and outcast others.

The competition will be a combination of physical endurance tests, theoretical tests, business games, case study competitions, presentations, team-building exercises, on ground business exercises, interviews, debates, strategy games, some unexpected flips to make things interesting and keep the student managers on their toes. This event will act as an integration mechanism by bridging the segmented knowledge of various disciplines and the creative skills of the participants.

Jack Welch once said that – “If you pick the right people and give them the right opportunity to spread their wings, you almost don’t have to manage them”. This is your opportunity to show the world what you are made of, why are you different from the many others struggling to do the same task. Make the most of it.
Quoting the Bhagavad Gita - “One who has control over the mind is tranquil in heat and cold, in pleasure and pain, and in honor and dishonor; and is ever steadfast with the Supreme Self.” Are you ready to take the challenge to be the last man standing?

Orion 2010 - The Basics

Orion 2010 Concept Note
Orion 2010 is the Annual Management Festival of Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies (SIMS). Orion 2010 is being conceptualized and executed completely by the Student Managers of SIMS. Our endeavor is to bring together students from various institutes around India to compete at Orion 2010 with “The SIMS way of life” as the theme of every event, competition and contest carried out on the 20th & 21st of February.
Orion 2010 - Philosophy
“The SIMS way of life” is what separates SIMS and Orion 2010 from the rest of the pack. “The SIMS way of life” is different since unlike the other B-schools in India, what sets apart students of SIMS, is our spirit, enterprising nature, creative and innovative streak, unshakable ethics and principles, a can-do attitude, mental thoughness and street smartness unparalleled by any other institute in India. Influenced heavily by our defense backgrounds and ethos, the student managers of SIMS, are conditioned to be not only physically and mentally tough, but to also enjoy and cherish even times of adversity. With an almost uncanny ability to think beyond the obvious, most students from SIMS find great joy and motivation in traversing the uncertainties and unknowns of life.

Orion 2010 – for the participants
Orion 2010 is being designed to take into account these amazing set of values connected to “The SIMS way of life” and all the events will be designed with this as the central theme. Hence any event or competition at Orion 2010 will be replete with twists, turns and have a very real, raw and in-your-face edge to them. All events are being designed to make participants and contestants feel the pressure, force them to think on their feet, get them out of their comfort zones and negate their concept of “the obvious” while still making them have loads of fun and take back lots of cherished memories. Winners of each event will be given prizes in cash and kind.
Orion 2010 – for the alumnus
Orion 2010 is our first step at reaching out to our Alumnus, many of whom feel a disconnect with the institute. We are looking at calling up to 30 to 40 alumnus of SIMS to judge various events and be a part of Orion 2010. A concerted effort is being made for them to help us with sponsorships for the festival. The theme “The SIMS way of life” fits in perfectly for this purpose since it creates a reason for the alumnus to feel ownership for Orion 2010.We will be sending constant updates through emails and a dedicated blog for our alumnus for Orion 2010.

Orion 2010 – for the batch
Orion 2010 is also our first step at repositioning and rebranding SIMS and its student managers. The Annual management festival is being designed and will be executed to project how student managers at SIMS are different from those of any other Institute. All activities of Orion 2010 will revolve only around the following goals
1. To initiate an “out-reach” program for the Alumnus so that they may develop a reconnect with the institute and subsequently the present batches.
2. To help rebrand and reposition SIMS and its student managers by aligning the image with all the qualities mentioned under “The SIMS way of life”.
3. To expose other institutes and colleges to SIMS and “The SIMS way of life”. This is not just our theme but also our USP and it has not been exploited by us to our advantage.
4. To build our reputation, in front of prospective recruiters, as an institute with great differential advantage among B-schools.
Orion 2010 – Details
Orion 2010 is being planned as a 2 day festival which will run almost 48 hours non-stop. All management events will be open for B-schools and cultural events will be open for B-schools as well as graduation colleges.
Orion 2010 – Pronunciation & Communication standard
1. 2010 – pronounced as twenty ten
2. Orion – pronounced as “O-RYE-UN”
3. Official font for all emails - Calibri
4. Words such as SIMS, Orion 2010, The SIMS way of life, Tag Line and any dates to be in bold only
5. “The SIMS way of life” is our theme for Orion 2010
6. The theme will always be mentioned as written above.
7. No other word apart from SIMS will appear in capitals.
8. It’s an Annual Management Festival
9. All competitions, contests etc will be called “Events”.

We have called Orion 2010 as a Festival since it celebrates the essence of our theme “The SIMS way of life” through various competitions and cultural events.
Orion 2010 - Tag Line – Survive. Adapt. Evolve. Thrive - are the stages which any organism goes through while entering a new and challenging environment. It symbolizes how the festival and its events incorporate the “The SIMS way of life” which is oriented towards successfully navigating challenging and taxing situations/ environments by a person’s wit and his/her ability to think on their feet.
